In debate, each round centers around a certain resolution, this year it was: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its exploration and/or development of space beyond the Earth's mesosphere. Debate teams consist of two people where each trades off giving speeches as either the affirmative (arguing for a military reduction) or the negative (arguing against the affirmative's plan). Speeches are an amalgamation of two main types of arguments, Analytics (arguments that are not supported by evidence) and Evidenced Arguments (debaters call them 'cards'). One of the first things most notice when entering a debate round is the speed, debaters read/speak very quickly in order to get as many arguments as possible into the round. Debate is a highly academic activity and most of the topics are very current events based, for instance knowing the current political climate and the basics of international relations are essential to doing well in each round.
